While nearly 50 million Americans do not have health insurance, even more of their pets don’t have health insurance either, and a recent pet health report stated that there is a significant rise in pet health issues.
Banfield Pet Hospital put together a report on pet health using data collected from the 2.1 million dogs and nearly 450,000 cats from its 770 veterinary hospitals in the U.S. You can find the whole pet health report online, but here are the key takeaways for concerned dog owners:
- Dog diabetes is on the rise. The report cited a 32 percent increase in canine diabetes since 2006 at Banfield hospitals. Cats didn’t get away clean either, with a 16 percent increase in diabetes.
- But what’s the most common disease? Dental disease: It affects 78 percent of dogs over the age of 3. Apparently, this disease is associated with changes to the liver, kidney or cardiac functions.
- Heartworm disease is another top killer for pets, mainly in the Southern U.S. — nearly 7 percent of all the dogs treated in Mississippi were diagnosed with it!
- Flea and tick infestations are also on the rise, with a 16 percent increase for canines over the last five years.
If you think your dog may have a problem with any of these common ailments, take your dog to see the vet in the next few weeks. Most diseases are easier to treat and less likely to cause major problems if you catch them earlier rather than later.
The report also includes a chart on the percentage of particular dog breeds from those that are brought to Banfield hospitals. Its an interesting way to keep track of breed popularity.
