Choosing the right dog sitter is a challenge and your pet’s safety and security could be at risk, so it’s understandably stressful. While designer dog carriers can help you take your pet anywhere, even on airlines, sometimes it just isn’t an option. So, how do you pick the right person to watch your pet?
Here are a few tips for picking the perfect dog sitter:
- They own dogs or have in the recent past. A good dog sitter should be a dog person. How else can they empathize and care for your animal? They need to have a basic understanding of what dogs need. If you have a high-maintenance dog, whether by breed or personality, finding a dog person is even more important!
- This person needs to be reliable. Not only will you be giving them access to your home or taking your dog to theirs, but they will be completely in control of your favorite pet. If the person you’re considering has a history of flaking on you or coming up with excuses, look for another pet sitter.
- The potential sitter should care about the details you give them. If they aren’t writing them down or don’t seem interested in the finer care details, this is a red flag.
- Preferably, it will be someone you know. If not, see if there is a local, reputable agency that can find you a dog sitter or consider taking your dog to a well-maintained kennel. Look for reviews of these businesses online and review their Better Business Bureau rating.
- If you’re going to be taking your dog to someone else’s place, make sure your pet will get along with theirs first!
